A Network That Could Withstand A Nuclear Bomb


In 1964, the RAND Corporation sought to design a communications network that could link cities, states, and military bases and withstand an atomic bomb. Paul Baran of RAND put forth a proposal entitled "On Distributed Communication Networks." This new network would have no central authority and was thus designed from the beginning to be more fail-proof.
