The Internet Gets Fast / DNS Created

Backbone:50Kbps ARPANET, 56Kbps CSNET, Hosts:1024

The Internet Gets Fast
Upgrade to CSNET was contracted to MCI. The new circuits would be T1 lines, 1.544 Mbps (Million bits per second), which is twenty-five times faster than the old 56 Kbps lines. The new network was to be called NSFNET (National Science Foundation Network), and old lines would continue to be called CSNET.

DNS Created
1984 also saw the introduction of the Domain Named Server (DNS). Before the DNS existed, users were required to enter a IP address to reach a web site such as 72.21.214.128 to access the Amazon web site. Using the domain name server, users were able to use the domain name amazon.com instead of the IP address 72.21.214.128.
